‘The Sopranos’ stars bound for Sundance
By · Comments“The Sopranos” co-stars James Gandolfini and Edie Falco are in the hunt for awards at the Sundance Film Festival.
Robert Redford’s independent-film showcase next month includes director Jake Scott’s New Orleans drama “Welcome to the Rileys,” which co-stars Gandolfini and Stewart. Falco is among the cast of Eric Mendelsohn’s suburban drama “3 Backyards,” while Portman stars alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rainn Wilson in Spencer Susser’s family tale “Hesher.”
The films are among 16 screening in Sundance’s U.S. dramatic competition and were selected from more than 1,000 movies submitted to the festival, which runs Jan. 21-31 in Park City, Utah.
Other titles announced Wednesday include Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s “Howl,” an Allen Ginsberg tale starring James Franco, Mary-Louise Parker, Jon Hamm and David Strathairn; Tanya Hamilton’s racial drama “Night Catches Us,” with Anthony Mackie and Kerry Washington; and Kevin Tyler Asch’s Ecstasy-smuggling crime story “Holy Rollers,” featuring Jesse Eisenberg.
Sundance is dispensing with its opening-night tradition of premiering a film that is not competing for a prize. Instead, it will start with screenings of one dramatic competition film and one entry in the documentary competition. Those opening films will be announced later.
“We decided to launch into the competition rather than trying to find a film that encapsulates the whole eclectic group that follows,” said John Cooper, a longtime Sundance programmer who is overseeing the show for the first time after being promoted to festival director in March.
The competition presents stars of past top prize winners at Sundance. Among them are Derek Cianfrance’s marital drama “Blue Valentine,” with Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling, who starred in the festival’s 2001 grand jury award winner “The Believer.”
Melissa Leo — who starred in last year’s grand jury prize winner, “Frozen River,” which earned her an Academy Award nomination — appears in two competition films this time: Stewart and Gandolfini’s “Welcome to the Rileys” and Ryan Piers Williams’ war-homecoming drama “The Dry Land.” The latter also features “Ugly Betty” star America Ferrera, whose career break came with “Real Women Have Curves,” which won the 2002 audience award as favorite U.S. drama among Sundance movie-goers.
Mark Ruffalo makes his directing debut with the faith-healing story “Sympathy for Delicious,” reuniting him on-screen with Laura Linney, his co-star in “You Can Count on Me,” which shared the festival’s 2000 grand jury prize. “Sympathy for Delicious” also stars Orlando Bloom and Juliette Lewis.
The 16 films in Sundance’s U.S. documentary competition include “Casino Jack & the United States of Money,” a study of corruption surrounding former lobbyist Jack Abramoff that was directed by Alex Gibney, whose “Taxi to the Dark Side” won the 2007 documentary Oscar.
Davis Guggenheim — whose Al Gore global-warming story “An Inconvenient Truth” premiered at Sundance in 2006 and won the documentary Oscar for that year — returns to the festival with the competition documentary “Waiting for Superman,” which scrutinizes the American public-education system.
Also in the documentary competition are Jessica Hernandez’s “Bhutto,” a portrait of slain Pakistani leader Benazir Bhutto; Robin Hessman’s “My Perestroika,” which traces the lives of five Moscow residents after the Soviet Union’s collapse; and Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington’s “Restrepo,” which examines the war in Afghanistan.
Sundance organizers also announced the lineup of 16 films each in the festival’s world-cinema narrative and documentary categories.

Sopranos” fans who are hoping to see their favorite gangsters come to the big screen can, well, fuhgeddaboudit. “I don’t think there will be one,” Michael Imperioli confessed at Tuesday’s screening of his directorial debut, “The Hungry Ghosts,” in NYC.
Added his former “Sopranos” co-star Lorraine Bracco: “There is no movie. It’s never going to happen, as far as I know.”
Leave it to the people behind Desperate Housewives to make sure that Wisteria Lane is never short of a vixen to stir things up. Producers have been on the lookout for another housewife to join the ABC dramedy for quite some time and now that Nicolette Sheridan’s character Edie is finally out of the picture, it’s time to put a face to Edie’s highly anticipated replacement.
According to Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello, Emmy-winning Sopranos heroine Drea de Matteo is joining the cast of Desperate Housewives as a series regular next season. Though her character is yet to be named, she’ll be playing the matriarch of a new Italian family. On the other hand, casting is underway for her on-screen landscape designer husband and their 19-year-old tightly wound son, who is likely to strike a spark with one of the neighborhood girls.
Perhaps no one can ever replace Nicolette Sheridan’s Edie but you have to give props to the people behind this brilliant casting choice. Drea de Matteo obviously has that strong Italian vibe going and seeing her blend in with the rest of the residents of Wisteria Lane would be like a fish out of water — unless her character traded the hectic New York City scene for the picket-fenced life on Wisteria Lane for an entirely different agenda.
Apart from playing Adriana La Cerva, fiancée of Tony Soprano’s protegé, Christopher Moltisanti on the mob drama The Sopranos, Drea de Matteo has also played Joey Tribbiani’s sister Gina on the NBC sitcom Joey and graced the big screen as part of films like Lake City, The Good Life and Broken English. At present, she stars as Wendy Case on FX original series Sons of Anarchy and is working on the movie New York, I Love You.
The Sopranos: Edie Falco has come a long way
By · CommentsEdie Falco who played the famous Mob wife Carmela Soprano in “The Sopranos” is now starring as a nurse in her own series “Nurse Jackie” which is a darkly funny comedy premiered on Showtime. Falco plays a highly experienced, twisted emergency room nurse in New York’s All Saints hospital. She plays a unique character who is partly Florence Nightingale and partly fugitive, addicted to prescription drugs having a bad past. Jackie can go any length for anything she wants like she can have mid-day sex with a staff pharmacist who in return supplies her pain-killers. She can easily break the law and doesn’t think once before flushing a patient’s ear into the toilet.

The 45-year old Falco is a single mother of two children, a 5-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl. She says that single motherhood complicates her acting career but is very happy. This three time Emmy Award winner’s life has been a whirlpool. She is flooded with projects after The Sopranos who until 1990’s was so poor that she lived in Shacks with thousand other roommates. She did everything from waitressing to playing clown at weddings to earn money. Although she has done some films but she is better remembered as a television actress.
Falco has no problems playing Jackie’s character as she herself is a recovering alcoholic who has been a teetotaller for 17 years. Her Swedish origin was e reason for her getting addicted to alcohol and has experienced the damage it can do. Her memories of her scrounging days and her visits to the ER helped her in preparing for “Nurse Jackie”.
Falco has never married though her romance with her co-star Stanley Tucci became very famous. Falco was attracted to theatre quite early because of her mother work at the community theatre but she could never get that big break. She was confident that some day she would get into acting and this strong belief changed things for her. She got several television roles and finally came “The Sopranos“.
According to Falco, neither getting sober nor her 2004 attack with breast cancer was her greatest nightmare. It was the persistent money problems that she faced in 1980’s and early 1990’s. Falco is very open-ended as an actor. Although she plans not to work this summer but if some good project comes up, she would definitely give it a thought.

While thumbing through some news website, I read the above statement, stating that The Sopranos
can be one of the best TV shows ever. This six-season long HBO drama was very well received by viewers and it got appraise from viewers and critics alike. HBO was its original podium and it later found its way on various other networks in dozens of other countries. stumbling.

All events were set in New Jersey and protagonist was Tony Soprano, a mobster. It threw light on his everyday troubles as he tried his best to manage with the conflicting requirements of his domestic life while coping with the issues of the criminal organization he heads. The credit of Sopranos’ success goes to Chase and the writing team which dealt brilliantly with psychological, philosophical and social aspects of life of an individual with criminal background.
The title of the most financially successful series has already been given to ‘The Sopranos’ and it’d really be a surprise if people choose it as the best TV show

‘The Sopranos’ came to an end on June 10, 2007 with the series finale ‘Made in America’. This episode brought an end to a great six season long series. Here, we saw that while coping with the rumors of his own crew might have flipped, Tony tried to seek peace with Leotardo crew. AJ took an important decision regarding his upcoming life. Elsewhere Silvio was still in coma. Bobby had been derailed so nothing was left hidden. It was an awesome episode and gave a good end to a well received drama. Considering the above points, do you think that ‘The Sopranos’ can be named as the No. 1 TV show ever? Or what’s your say?
The Sopranos Recap: Johnny Cakes
By · CommentsWe see more of Vito this week, as he gets closer to the chef of those wonderful Johnny Cakes. Unfortunately Vito still doesn’t know how to deal with his homosexuality, and they get in a fight. Until Vito swallows his pride, sort of apologizes, then we see them riding motorcycles through the daisies and… yes, this really is The Sopranos.
Sad, isn’t it?
Meanwhile, AJ likes going to the club and getting high and getting large bills for his friends to drink, or something, and he also decides to go to the looney bin, thinking he’s going to knife Uncle Junior, but it’s AJ. He drops the knife on the floor and gets caught.
Tony is approached by Jamba Juice to sell a building (actually, by their hot real estate representative, played by Juliana Marguiles), but he doesn’t want to sell. Instead, he tries to sleep with her. At last, things getting interesting. He holds out for a higher price, she plays hard-to-get, then finally he sells, she relents, and… nothing.
Either Tony has an attack of his conscience or he doesn’t want her to see his scar, a la Minnie Driver in Return to Me. Neither is a particularly interesting development. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for monogamy in a real relationship, but we’re talking television here. This is The Sopranos. Come on. Where’s the action?
